One of the things I like about shooting is that it makes life slow down. Things have been running at a pretty hectic pace lately but photography literally makes you stop and take in the moment. It is those moments that make you stop to appreciate life a little more that are very valuable and make life a little sweeter.
I’ll post more from this shoot a little later tonight as we had a lot of wonderful things come together…
Family birthday parties are a great opportunity to experiment. It doesn’t take much effort and family members typically are happy afterwards that you captured the moment. This shot is of my niece, who just turned 8. Shooting manual flash indoors with pocket wizards around small groups of people can be challenging, which is why it is important to practice, practice, practice. I wish I had brought a snoot and dialed the flash a notch or two down, but for a quick shot, it was good practice.
Flashback to 2003…
In doing some computer and file clean up (yes, I have a few firewire drives that have been sitting in the closet that I am cleaning off finally) I came across this photo of me back in 2003. I was getting ready to be flown onto the Carl Vinson Carrier (CVN70) just off the coast of Australia. I was at the time working for a Navy contractor and my job was to go and take a bunch of photos and video as the carrier went from Australia to Hong Kong. Two thoughts occur to me now…
1. That was a pretty cool experience.
2. I’m glad I asked somebody to snap my photo.
So here’s to taking more pictures and the value of documenting life.
