I should probably apologize for the overload of New York pictures as of late. But the reality of it is that I guess I got a little bit of that New York bug. The bug where it is just hard to shake it from your mind and you have cravings to go back and continue to explore and just feel like you are a small part of something so crazy and big. Besides, I honestly feel like the amount of photography exploration that is possible in New York is literally second to none - from people, buildings, textures, water, memorable places, nightlife, etc…
Now, I’ve never been a huge fan of big cities and I distinctly remember my first few trips to New York and how much anxiety I felt walking the streets. (You have to remember, I spent most of my childhood in the woods of Yellowstone.) It was that type of anxiety that almost overwhelmed you to the point that you just wanted to run and hide in the country… with no one around.
So if you would have asked me before if I would ever have thought of trying some street photography, I probably would have laughed. After all, what kind of dork walks around with a big camera snapping photos of random people? I guess I do now… So I ended up trying an experiment where I would shoot with my wide-angle and primarily shoot from the hip - literally. So in a way, my street-walking became a game in seeing if I could capture any good photos from the hip.
Doing exercises like this I think is good. It pushes you to get out of your comfort zone and it helps you explore different perspectives and approaches to taking pictures. Maybe one day I’ll have enough photos from New York to make a personal coffee table book.
